Mary* is a Katrina evacuee from New Orleans. After arriving in Houston, she encountered difficulty with re-establishing her life and began to suffer from depression. One day she received a call from Career and Recovery Resources inviting her to come in to learn about our Public Service Employment Project. Mary was placed in subsidized employment with a local non-profit agency. Four days later she was offered and accepted a permanent position on the management team of that agency.
John* was released from prison after serving 10 years for a felony offense. He was released with the minimum necessities but had a lot of drive to succeed. With guidance and support from Central Employment Services, John was able to establish a new beginning. For the past three years he has been an independent contractor, self-employed as a barber. His popularity and success as a barber has encouraged him to develop plans for expansion of his business.
Larry* was a bright young college student when he sustained traumatic brain injury after a car accident in 2001. He has endured physical rehabilitation as well as challenges relating to his cognitive processing abilities. On his journey to recovery, Larry made a decision to seek employment. He was referred to our Vocational Rehabilitation Employment Services and quickly secured a position within the Houston Independent School System.
James* already had B.A. in Psychology and many years experience when enrolled in the agency’s computer course. Computer literacy is essential in today’s job market and crucial to many workforce applications. James successfully completed the course and now has Microsoft Office certification to add to his accomplishments.
