Indrani Goradia and Indrani’s Light Foundation at the 19thAnnual Barrier Breaker Awards Luncheon

HOUSTON, February 15, 2015 — To celebrate its 70th Anniversary of helping people identify and overcome barriers to employment, Career and Recovery Resources is planning a luncheon to honor its star clients, former honorees and the 2015 honorees, Indrani Goradia and her Indrani’s Light Foundation.

In keeping with a 19-year tradition of applauding inspirational community leaders who have achieved success or helped others to overcome barriers to success, the awards luncheon is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. – 1p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at the Hyatt Regency-Houston Ballroom. Luncheon Co-Chairs are Bimla and Swatantra Jain.

Indrani Goradia is a philanthropist and advocate for women’s health and empowerment. She is the founder and visionary guiding Indrani’s Light Foundation (ILF), a nonprofit foundation dedicated to providing solutions to Gender Based Violence. She is a strong supporter of the work of Career and Recovery Resources as a member of the Advisory Board following several years as a member of the Board of Directors.

Over the past ten years, Ms. Goradia has partnered with various organizations to bring health, strength and wellness to women in need through her foundation. ILF has recently partnered with and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to begin a pilot project on reducing gender violence in Delhi, India and in Port of Spain Trinidad.

Ms. Goradia is a determined advocate for girls and women leading empowerment trainings in several countries around the world. A speaker, an author, and an activist, she is most proud of her roles of wife and mother. Herself a victim of domestic violence as a child and young adult, she has worked tirelessly to help parents understand the devastating effects that domestic violence has on children. Longing to erase Gender Based Violence in her lifetime, she frequently says “if one of us is abused, we are all abused.”

In addition, the awards luncheon recognizes Career and Recovery Resources’ Star Clients who, with the help of CRR, have successfully overcome personal barriers to achieve employment and lead productive lives. During the luncheon, Star Clients share their inspiring life stories and explain how CRR positively affected their lives.

“Indrani Goradia is an outstanding example of a community leader who works both locally and globally to eliminate domestic violence,” says Dr. Vernus C. Swisher, CEO of Career and Recovery Resources, Inc.

Ms. Goradia is a graduate of Queens College with a BA in speech and communications. She is a Master Certified Life Coach with Martha Beck Inc. and a Certified Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapist. As well, she is author of the Indrani Principal: Inhale Life, Exhale joy; Co-Author of: Stepping Stones for Success and Co-Author of: Discover Your Inner Strength.

Unemployment can be an extremely painful life experience. Long-term unemployment can lead to divorce, domestic violence, substance abuse, and even homelessness. For these reasons, and others, Career and Recovery Resources, Inc. (CRR), a nonprofit United Way of Greater Houston agency helps individuals identify and overcome barriers to employment.

As CRR’s main fundraiser, the Barrier Breaker Awards luncheon proceeds benefit the organization’s programs, which are dedicated to providing persons in need of employment with sound career advice. The agency offers career counseling and testing, job search assistance, computer training, mock interviews and other work related resources. Case management and employment services are provided for clients from all walks of life including returning veterans, homeless, persons with disabilities, literacy-challenged, older workers, ex-offenders, and persons in substance abuse recovery. Other clients are college-educated or highly-skilled professionals who seek career coaching and counseling. These services better equip clients with the confidence to gain successful employment. In 2014, the agency served more than 13,500 clients.

This year’s Luncheon Co-Chairs are Bimla and Swatantra Jain.
